Donkey Visit to the Manor

Donkey Visit to the Manor We had a wonderful morning when the donkey Molly from the Elisabeth Svesden Trust in Manchester visited us.

Molly was fantastic and visited all the residents in the Manor and was ever so gentle and calm.

We handed over two hand knitted blankets to keep the donkey's warm over the festive period and also a £30 donation to the trust.

The residents were thrilled with the visit and got a lot of them thinking about their younger days.

We all had a lovely cup of tea and a biscuit and also gave Molly the donkey a few packets of biscuits to take home.

Many thanks to Susan who took some wonderful pics and they will soon be displayed in the Manor.

Many thanks.

Ladies Christmas Evening

Ladies Christmas Evening What an amazing evening we had at the Ladies Christmas Evening 5th December 2011 at Rossendale Sports Club.

The weather was not that kind to us but the lovely ladies of Rossendale showed up and had a wonderful evening.

We had a great selection of stalls and also the tombola, raffle, mulled wine and mince pies along with our own handmade/knitted stall.

Father Christmas was great at selling the tickets for the raffle and we had a wonderful response with over 36 prizes to be won. Thank you to all those who donated to it.

The atmosphere was so Christmasy with candles, oranges decorated with cloves and Christmas music playing. The seats were always fully taken and everyone was relaxed and having a great time.

A big Thank You to Danni at the club who kept me sane and also Veronica who helped with the refreshments on the evening.

Our first count is £600 so that is an amazing amount and we will have a final count the week before Christmas.

Thank you to all involved. Loads of pics to look at in the gallery and below.

Get Connected Update

Get Connected Update We had Jennifer and Ross visit us from the Get Connected Project and they had a really enjoyable day learning about our project with the iPads.

We showed them the benefits of this new technology and what that means to our residents. Using the apps already on the iPads we navigated them through, games, photos, music, internet and lots more. They were very interested in what could be achieved in such a small time scale.

Our community connections were also a great hit as we are working with 3 local primary schools along with the Rossendale Hospice.

We received a letter from Jennifer and that is attached for you to see.

If you have any photos that you wish to be added to the iPads for your relative please leave them in the office for my attention and they will be scanned and returned.

Donkey Visit Planned

We are very happy that the Elisabeth Svesden Trust will be visiting us again with one of their wonderful donkeys on Wednesday 23rd November at 10.00 am.

On this visit we will also be presenting the trust with two knitted blankets completed by Paula Bond, Activity Co-ordinator along with help from residents and the community.

We have been hard at work knitting squares in some wonderful colours and sewing them together to get the two blankets ready for their visit. These will help to keep the donkeys lovely and warm in the colder months ahead.

Please come along and visit to see the donkey and enjoy a cup of tea and a piece of cake. They usually only stay for about 25/30 minutes but it is a great sight to see the residents interact with the donkey.

Hope to see you on the day.

Happy Birthday Celebrations!!!

It was a wonderful day when Muriel one of our residents celebrated her 97th Birthday on the 21st September 2011.

Muriel was very excited the day before and kept asking the time and day trying to rush the hours away.

It was a quiet morning with some lovely cards and birthday wishes but come the afternoon the party began.

Staff and friends presented Muriel with a wonderful birthday cake in the shape of a hymn book and she received cards and presents galore. The room was decorated with balloons, banners and streamers to celebrate a wonderful occasion.

Muriel wishes to thank her friends in fellowship and everybody at Padiham for their great kindness keeping her in touch and for their generous gifts on her 97th birthday.

She had a lovely day very special because everyone came to see her, Sheilah, Helga, Jeff, she had cards from Australia and so many jaffa cakes that she is now going to have to live to be 98 to eat them all, she keeps us all in order and when someone mentions religion she perks up and says that she is a Unitarian and always will be and doesn't hold with all this happy clappy view of church services.

She always reminds me that when they had the Sunday School Anniversary at Newchurch there was walking through the area followed by a field day, then they had coffee and buns. After this a service and every year they sang the day thou gavest (Lord is ended) and one year they sang something else and everyone went crazy!

All that is a long time ago but Muriel remembers the old Unitarians and is very proud of their tradition, she enjoys watching the TV and says to me what is happening next?

Muriel keeps us all in our place and no messing, so many thanks for keeping her in the loop and Mavis, sending the newsletters and church calendars.

Muriel had a visit from Julie her carer and enjoyed her special day, she would write to you all if she were able but it is a big effort for her and so we will be grateful if you will accept this message in place of a more formal arrangement

Get Connected Directors To Visit The Manor

Get Connected Directors To Visit The Manor As you know we have been using the iPads now for nearly 6 months and we are pleased with our progress and how the iPad has been come a really useful therapeutic tool for our residents.

We are delighted that we are being visited by the Get Connected Directors on Friday 16th September to show them the good practice and work we have achieved since receiving the iPads.

Not only have we used them with the Manor for activities and planned events but we have also touched the community around us.

Rossendale Hospice are using 4 iPads now on a weekly basis to use with their cilents who attend session during Tuesday - Friday. They have proved a big hit as initially they only used 2 iPads but they are now so much in demand we have increased the availability for them.

Paula Bond our Activity Co-ordinator is also working along side 3 local Primary Schools who have welcomed the new technology with open arms. The children who are mainly year 6 pupils work on their curriculum subjects and place information onto the iPads to be brought back to the Manor for our residents to see which is wonderful to see.

We currently have a wonderful display from St James The Less Primary School in Rawtenstall. This is a large letter written in hieroglyphics and it is wonderful. We also have letters from Crawshawbooth Primary thanking us for our time and visit.

This is a great outcome for our project and we look forward to achieving more in the future.

Sunflowers Reach New Heights

Sunflowers Reach New Heights The residents and staff have entered into a sunflower completion at Holme Manor. We planted the seeds over 3 months ago and the sunflowers are doing really well in our lovely plot at the top of the garden. There are 36 sunflowers in total which will look amazing when they burst into flower.

School Projects

School Projects We are currently working with the yr5 children at St James the Less School, Rawtenstall. The children have been making presentations, taking photos, making videos and so much more with the Holme Manor iPads. So far we have been to Egypt the land of Pharaohs and now we have been working on the wonderful children’s favourite Peter Pan.

The children are learning new skills with the iPad technology and are really enjoying the interaction between their curriculum subjects and our residents. The children are in charge of the project and when it has been completed it is taken back to the residents to allow discussions to take place about that subject. It has really opened the door to another world for our residents.

The children this week presented us with a wonderful message written on gold paper using hydroglicfs. This has been placed in the entrance to the manor with the English version for those of us who are rusty on this language.

We have lots more sessions planned and will stay with the children when they more to year 6 in September.

As well as the above school we are now going to work closely with St Marys in Haslingden and this project will run to the end of term and then start again in September. The children also learn about dementia and what life can be like within a care centre.

iTea a Right Royal Event

iTea a Right Royal Event WOW! What a day for a wedding. The sun was shinning the sky was blue and we were all ready for a right royal knees up.

The stage had been set with decorations, cupcakes, wonderful drinks, chocolates, iPads and much much more.

We had the television set to the right channel, iPads also had the wedding live for residents to watch. It was everywhere and it was fantastic.

We watched every minute of the day and ensured that residents were kept informed of the events and what was happening. Lunch was served after the ceremony and it was so lovely we had union jack napkins to keep with the theme.

As relatives arrived they were greeted and shown the iPads along with their family member and left to have a play and see what the iPad can do.

Slideshows of the relatives were also available to show what a valuable tool they are.

The Wedding Wall was wonderful and got everyone talking along with the selection of Royal images that were displayed from 1923 to the present day.

Drinks were served along with cupcakes, mints, chocolates. They went down a treat. Cream Soda, Dandelion & Burdock, Black Beer & Raisin and Sarsparalia brought back wonderful memories of childhood days.

Thank you for your support and hope you enjoyed the day.

Entertainment is a Hit

Entertainment is a Hit Residents, staff and relatives enjoyed an afternoon of singing from Peter who has sang at the Manor before.

As residents enjoyed their lunch Peter set up in the conservatory and get himself changed ready for his session to start at 1.30pm.

We all gathered in the conservatory and listened to a medley of songs from the Rat Pack, to Italian classics. It was great and a wonderful time was had by all. He got feet tapping, hands clapping and even a few fantastic dance moves from the residents.

Once Peter had finished we had refreshments and a good old natter about the songs and what we like to listen to.

Watch this space for our next entertainment.

Watch Out the Gardner's Are About

Watch Out the Gardner's Are About it was a pleasure to take two of our residents along to the Bacup Greenhouses at Stubbylee, Bacup on Tuesday 12th April for our first session at this great project.

The project will be a weekly session for our residents and we will be involved in planting seeds and also cuttings, painting furniture that has been made to sell within the shop, weeding, the pond project, outdoor areas and plenty more. It is a lovely opportunity again for us to get involved in the community and give our residents time to get their hands dirty and also be involved in something they enjoy.

This week we prepared seed trays and also planted marigolds that will be eventually planted in the garden area outside. We didn't even stop for a brew!!!

As you can see from the photo's a good time was had and we cannot wait for our next visit.

Its a Date

Its a Date Its was great day when we visited The Duke of Wellington on Grane Road for a Carvery on the 29th March 2011. 5 residents, 2 members of staff and myself (Paula) decided to go out for lunch and relax for the afternoon.

The food was wonderful and we all ate so much it was a wonder we could get through the door. The selection was great and we all had a bit of everything going which included, pork, turkey, beef and ham. 6 veg and also potatoes and gravy.....

Puds went down a storm the trifle was lovely and that seemed to the favourite all round.

The conversation just flowed I think we covered every topic and more with such a great atmosphere amongst us we really livened the place up.

The residents enjoyed a tipple or two of their choice and the time flew by before we returned for an afternoon snooze.

Watch this space for our next lunch date........

Community Links Going Strong

Ifs official the iPads are a big hit!! Not just with our residents and staff but also in our community. I have been to visit St James the Less Primary School, Rawtenstall to start a project with their Year 5 and 6 children. The children will meet myself Paula and Suzanne - Team Leader on the 24th May where we will take a small assembly and start our project. As an ice-breaker the children will have to match the residents picture with their job and also the year they were born! Not any easy task for the children as they are use to very different jobs in than in may be 1914. We already have close links with the school but this is another way of bridging the gap and getting everyone involved using the iPads and the children will be able to learn us a thing or too!

Also the local Hospice has taken to the iPads for their therapy sessions. This only started this week but already we will have to increase the iPads to 3 and start to download requests. This is fantastic news for everyone and so pleased that they are bring so much pleasure.

More news soon.........

Residents Bake Cupcakes

Residents Bake Cupcakes Residents put on their aprons and had a wonderful baking session on Thursday 17th March. We decided to make some vanilla cupcakes to go with hot chocolate which was to be enjoyed for afternoon refreshment.

We made a light vanilla mix and baked them before decorating with icing, chocolate chips and sugar strands.

It was a lovely activity for all those residents who were involved and we chatted and reminisced about what they would have made for their families or even what their mum's would have made.

Everyone enjoyed the cupcakes and hot chocolate and was a nice change for everyone.

Here's to more baking sessions!

Holme Manor iPads Arrive March 2011

Holme Manor iPads Arrive March 2011 At last the long awaited iPads have arrived at Holme Manor. It has taken 6 months to get here and everyone at the Manor is excited to see this latest technology in action.
Residents are being shown simple games that they can use for example, crosswords, word searches, hangman, draughts and many more. The technology has not limits and we need to take it slowly so that we all learn together.
Families are being asked to supply information on their family members to enable specific tailor made programmes.
Along with games etc a lovely slideshow of photographs has been set up with background music to allow residents to reminisce on their wonderful live.
The technology can only be seen as a great therapeutic tool for all who get involved in this project.
Events are being organised to help promote the iPads technology and also get everyone working together for a wonderful outcome.
Watch this space for further information.
